Oh, how I sing my woes this night. Forgive my bumbling tongue as I relay today's events, the ale hath poisoned my senses and slowed my thoughts.
The entrails of a barkeep are staining my hardwood floor but my housekeeping tasks shall resume tomorrow during the kiss of a new day.
Do not fret, my feet rest upon the skull of what was once a thief. No innocence has been lost. I am a just man and have rid the earth of yet another unworthy scoundrel, the likes of which shall cheat me no more. He paid his penance well with every swing of my axe. I raise my chalice high as I toast a victory to myself. I am sickened by the common man for he does not live by reason but by illusions of his own will.
Perhaps the stray cat that invades my privacy each night will arrive soon and squeeze through the broken glass in my window to feast upon the bloody remains of the damned so as to lift my burden in the morn.
That wretched cat! I know it belongs to a witch. Perhaps 'tis the witch herself in disguise. How many times has she avoided my wrath? She is quick and she is sly. I cannot catch her. I cannot trap her nor spear her. No rocks will strike her. No weapon will mame or kill her wicked form. Perhaps she is a phantom, a ghostly shadow with such detailed clarity to tease the human eye she only appears as flesh and blood. Why does she torment me so?
Each time the demonic feline arrives, that relentless scratching begins … and the cries … the moaning … it could drive a man … mad! 'Tis not the cat which shatters the silence for she is as quiet as the devils shadow. I am referring, of course, to the trapped souls beneath this room.
She awakens them. She stirs the bones and the mummified remains of my collection beneath the floorboards of my home. The cellar is small yet scores of voices repeat the tones of their final hours with me and the sounds of their nails scratch and claw at the wood beneath my floor … the sounds are everywhere beneath me, even the worms cannot quiet them nor the maggots which spill from their gaping mouths. She evokes them as her emerald green eyes stare defiantly into mine and the glow of her ebony fur catches the moonlight as she slinks about with such royal arrogance. Her evil intrusion has never been welcome here. I wish to impale her with my saber and leave her to rot in the night air, if only it were possible, yet the vengeance of the witches of the night are none to be reckoned with, for the devil himself could not defy the deities of this forest.
The scratching! The insanity has begun. That scratching! The sounds of it pimple my skin as my teeth clench together and my eyes narrow in rage. The scratching is persistent as the long yellowed nails of the dead scrape harder and harder under the floor beneath my chair. I feel the tremor of the boards beneath my feet as sweat trails down my temples. My heart is racing with the symphony of moans and cries that now echo from the cellar below. Damn them! I shout into the great night … damn them to Hell!
Curse that cat! That wretched cat! That cat which torments me!
